I have been a Consultant Rhinologist and ENT Surgeon at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport for 4 years. I’m originally from South Devon and studied medicine in Cardiff, always with the intention of pursuing a surgical career.
My positive experiences as an undergraduate in Wales cemented my decision to continue my basic surgical training and then my specialist training in the region. I have always had very supportive and encouraging mentorship from trainers. I enjoyed a high quality and high volume operative experience that is so crucial to training in a surgical speciality. I also loved working all over North and South Wales in a variety of training hospitals. I’ve even picked up some Welsh language skills along the way! I took advantage of the affiliated research links with Cardiff University and completed an M Phil during my training. Annual examinations for specialist trainees in ENT in Wales are excellent preparation for the intercollegiate exit exam and a sign of the commitment from trainers to deliver high quality training. I undertook some of my specialist training on a less than full-time (LTFT) basis after having twins and had brilliant support from a very family friendly Wales Deanery. I now use this experience in my role as consultant LTFT advisor.
I was tempted back over the border to complete a fellowship at Derriford hospital, Plymouth, in Rhinology. However, I knew that I wanted to return to Wales with these new skills to take up a consultant post. I enjoy working in the more traditional Aneurin Bevan style NHS in Wales. Even as a trainee I was able to engage with Welsh Government, and feel that there is a voice for doctors in Wales and the ability to genuinely influence change. The consultant contract in Wales encourages this and values supporting professional activities.
I would whole heartedly recommend training and working in Wales.
